We have painted the Kahikatea tree because there are a lot of these trees in our area.
At the bottom of the Kahikatea tree, we have added potatoes growing because this area is well known for potato farming.
All of the trees and birds on this mural are native to New Zealand and are seen around our school and across the Horowhenua.
Can you spot these plants and birds? The kowhai, Karaka ,Nikau cabbage tree, Kawakawa Harakeke, Ponga, Kiwi, Tui, Pukeko, Kereru, komako and the kārearea?
One of our really important plants on this mural is the harakeke plant.
Foxton and Shannon used to be well known for growing harakeke and using their fiber to make rope, fishing lines, nets, kete, and mats. The plant's nectar was also used as a sweetener and the dried flower stalks were used to make rafts.
The roots were boiled and used for medicine. We have learning spaces in our school called The Harakeke Hub and The Te Rito Hub. The te rito is the center shoot of the harakeke/flax plant.
